Hour of Power
Each year, NTA participates in the Hour of Power to remember those we’ve lost and support the fight against cancer. Be part of something bigger.
The Hour of Power Relay began in 2006 to honor Ted's memory and to help raise funds for research at the University of Chicago into the causes and treatment of sarcoma in young people. Now each year thousands of swimmers across the country and world participate in an Hour of Power Relay - colleges, high schools and swim clubs like NTA.

The Story of Ted Mullin
Not long ago a boy, named Ted Mullin from Winnetka, who loved to swim and always gave it his all, was a member of NTA. Ted grew up, graduated from New Trier High School and was named an Academic All-American and an Illinois State Scholar (he studied hard and swam for NT High School) and went off to attend Carleton College in Minnesota and swam for his college Team. Ted also coached for NTA while he was home during breaks. Tragically while Ted was attending college he became sick with a very rare soft-tissue cancer called Sarcoma. He fought a courageous battle but passed away from the disease in the fall of 2006. Ted's parents still live in Winnetka.
Event Information and Organization
Every year, New Trier Aquatics joins thousands of athletes from collegiate, high school, and club teams across the nation and abroad to celebrate the Annual Ted Mullin "Leave it in the Pool" Hour of Power Relay for Sarcoma Research, sponsored by Carleton College swimming and diving teams.
New Trier Aquatics is proud to continue our support of such a worthy cause.
Swimmers will participate in an hour of relays in memory of Ted and to raise money for a worthy cause. All participants will receive an Hour of Power swim cap just for swimming! Athletes do not need to raise money to participate - bringing everyone together as a team is also an important piece of Ted's legacy!
The Hour of Power event honors those who are fighting or have succumbed to cancer, including former Carleton swimmer Edward H. "Ted" Mullin, who passed away from synovial sarcoma, a rare soft-tissue cancer, in September 2006. The annual swim relay, which now includes dryland teams as well, has grown from 15 teams in its first year to as many as 160 teams and more than 8,000 athletes across the nation and the world in recent years. Participating swim teams engage in continuous relays of any stroke for a full hour of all-out swimming. Dryland teams engage in their particular sport non-stop for a full hour.
The Ted Mullin "Leave it in the Pool" Hour of Power Relay is the major fundraiser supporting the Ted Mullin Fund. Over the past several years event participants have raised $1,636,000 for research into rare pediatric cancers including sarcoma.
The funds have been used for a variety of projects that evaluate the genetic basis of sarcomas, the identification of novel markers of disease diagnosis or progression, and the development of new small molecule and cell therapies for resistant disease. Each summer, the University also hosts Ted Mullin Fund scholars, offering four Hour of Power collegiate participants an opportunity to advance their interest in science and cancer biology by spending 10 weeks in a laboratory under the mentorship of a pediatric cancer researcher within the Section of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology at the University of Chicago Medicine.

FJC is a 501c(3) Not-For-Profit Charity and a Foundation of Philanthropic Funds. All donations made to FJC/Ted Mullin Fund are tax-deductible to the extent allowed by United States law and support the sarcoma research program at the University of Chicago.
