Swim Team Programming
From beginners to national-level athletes, our swim team programs are designed to help every swimmer reach their full potential.
New Trier Aquatics (NTA) is a community based organization that develops athletes of all ages. The use of multiple levels allows specific instruction for each athlete during their time with the program. All movement between levels is based on a combination of skill and age progression and is solely at the discretion of the Head Coach

Bronze I
Bronze I is an introductory group. Swimmers in this group are able to swim a length of the pool freestyle and backstroke. Swimmers will be taught flip turns, forward dives, breaststroke, and butterfly. Swimmers in this group practice twice a week for 45 minutes.
Bronze II
Bronze II swimmers are legal in all four strokes and can swim free and back for a longer duration. Swimmers will continue to develop the basics of all four competitive strokes. Swimmers will be taught the skills and techniques necessary to demonstrate a proper sequential dive from the starting blocks, a backstroke start from the gutter, breaststroke pullouts, and will continue to increase their capacity for swimming.
Silver I
Silver I swimmers are legal in freestyle and backstroke and have a working knowledge of breaststroke. Swimmers will work to be legal in all four competitive strokes, and will be taught the skills and techniques necessary to demonstrate a proper sequential dive from the starting blocks, a backstroke start from the gutter, breaststroke pullouts, and will continue to increase their capacity for swimming.
Silver II
Silver II swimmers will continue to refine the four competitive strokes, starts, turns, and underwaters. Swimmers will complete short sets of kicking, drilling and swimming with the goal of increasing efficiency. Body position kicking and drills will be the dominant focus of the group. In addition, swimmers will attempt to extend proper technique over longer distances and/or at higher tempos.
Silver III
Silver III swimmers will continue to refine the skills necessary to be competitive in all four strokes while introducing a training element to their progression. Kicking in all positions will continue to be a focus as our swimmers also work to improve their distance per stroke at various speeds.
Gold I
Gold I is a transitional group adding more training elements to the technical foundation developed earlier in our program. Intervals and distances that challenge a swimmer’s ability to maintain technique over longer distances and at higher speeds will be a feature of Gold I. This group will train to compete in the 200’s of stroke, IM, and 500 freestyle.
Gold II
Gold II continues to progress the training elements and technical foundation developed earlier in our program. Intervals and distances that challenge their ability to maintain technique over longer distances and at higher speeds will be a feature of Gold II. This group will train to compete in the 200’s of stroke, IM, and 500 freestyle.
Gold III
Swimmers in Gold III will build a strong aerobic base as the foundation for their success. The group will challenge swimmers to employ good technique while improving their overall swimming and dryland strength. Swimmers will also be challenged to maintain speed for longer distances and durations in practice. Swimmers will train to compete in the 400 IM, 500 Free, 1000 Free, and 1650 Free.
Senior I
Senior I swimmers will expand upon the increased training and intensity introduced in the Gold groups. Intervals and distances that challenge their ability to maintain technique over longer distances and at higher speeds will be a feature of Senior I. Swimmers in the Senior I group will aim to be competitive at the Regional and State Level, and will train to compete in all events.
Senior II
Senior II swimmers will train to transition from state and local levels of competition to levels approaching their potential. This is a comprehensive training program focusing on competitive techniques, aerobic, and anaerobic development. Swimmers will be prepared to swim every event and distance offered in competitive swimming. There will be a performance component to qualify for this group.
Senior III
Senior III is for our most advanced senior swimmers that have demonstrated the ability to attend practices regularly (including dryland & morning practices). These swimmers are high school & college aged swimmers who are training to compete at the highest levels of our sport. This group is the culmination of the skills and training completed in previous groups. Swimmers must have demonstrated their desire and abilities to challenge themselves to achieve training and meet goals. Our athletes are working toward competing and scoring at the NCSA Junior Championships and moving toward Junior National competition.
